The over 10,000 sq feet space will be open 7 days week for both lunch and dinner. Midland Brew House has a wide range of wings – buffalo (mild, hot or 911), chipotle barbecue, teriyaki, guava Thai chili and maple bourbon, but I opted for coal-fired wings. Served in a cast iron skillet pulled from the coal-fired oven, their smoky flavor was pushed over the top with lemon garlic butter, fresh herbs and a cloak of caramelized onions that evokes French onion soup. And I don’t have the pizza, but the coal pizza looks amazing as well. I expect no less than an excellent burger at a sports bar, and the signature MBH burger is a winner, requiring two steady hands to pick it up. The chef starts with a special burger blend, then layers on bacon, pub cheese, a spicy chipotle barbecue sauce, and those crispy onions that push it over the top for me.

After debating what to order from the large selection of beer, including craft beers and a nice choice of beer on tap, we felt compelled to order classic bar grub for starters. A good variety of appetizers include brew house bacon, chicken pot stickers, Korean fire beef, and two styles of crispy calamari.

It comes with excellent hand-cut fries, served in a mini fry basket. A variety of mini tacos are served in soft flour tortillas, including ahi tuna and spicy salmon versions. I selected a filling of short ribs, cooked in a root beer stout demiglaze until fall-apart tender, then topped with braised red cabbage, with a squeeze of creamy cilantro ranch for good measure.

I had a healthy dose of skepticism about dining at a popular sports bar, but Midland Brew House turned out to be a wonderful surprise. Yes, there are many TVs, and many cheering sports fans, but the atmosphere is upscale and comfortable – and our meal was quite good. When compared to other restaurants, Midland Brew House is moderate. For something different, try crispy creme brulee French toast. Chunks of rich brioche are dipped into a creme brulee batter, rolled in nuts and crushed cornflakes, and fried until golden.
